Jareth Kaup- January Athlete of the Month

Jareth has been a member of our gym since September 2021 and since then he has been our 2nd most consistent member attending 335 classes and a goal session every quarter. He started his consistency with our winter committed club in 2021 and continued it this year achieving the highest attendance out of all our athletes during the months of November and December. He took it one step further and tried to encourage others this committed club by throwing in a $100 Rogue gift card to the prizes. The importance of showing up is sometimes lost in the day to day shuffle of life with all the changes and challenges that come up. Jareth has made his fitness a part of his day, a part of his routine and his life has benefitted in many ways as a result.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do for a living/study?

I grew up in a small town in Nebraska where everyone knew your business. Moved around after college and then ended up in Lincoln. I’ve been working in accounting for the past 10 years.

How did you find out about Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

I caught the 2014 Crossfit games on TV and became a big fan but never had the drive to try it. After several years of bad eating and always sitting at a desk my body started letting me know I needed a change. I kept needing to get bigger clothes and the aches and pains from doing the simplest tasks were a big wake up call. When I decided to finally do something to change my lifestyle I knew CrossFit was the one thing I wanted to try and Lincoln Nutrition and Fitness seemed like the right place to start.

What was the biggest obstacle for you to start?

The biggest hurdle when I first saw CrossFit was the thought that I was never fit enough to do it. All I ever saw was super athletic people doing movements I never thought about even attempting.

How did you overcome that obstacle?

When I decided to get my health back in order I decided that it didn’t matter how bad I’d look trying to do the movements everyone has to start somewhere. Little did I know there were modifications and so many ways to get the same stimulus from a CrossFit workout that wasn’t only Rx.

Do you remember your first workout?

I can remember going through foundations with Austin. The little 10 minute workouts let me know just how out of shape I was. One had pull ups that I couldn’t even do so did seated pull ups.  My arms hurt for 4 days. Another had a bike and wall ball shots, this did not go well and when I learned that the bike is not as easy as you would think.

Who was your coach, how did they help you push through it?

I had Austin through foundations and Emily through 6 am classes. Coaches have rotated around and I can say each one of them brings something different to class and I have learned so much from each and every one of them

Why do you keep coming back to Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

There are so many different reasons I keep coming back to class. One is the amazing community and great coaches. No one looks down on you if you can’t Rx every workout or if you can’t lift a lot of weight. It is a great feeling knowing everyone just wants each other to succeed and get better as an athlete. I also have a big thing about keeping routines and I’m at the point where if I don’t work out, my day is completely thrown off and I don’t handle that change well.

How do you balance health & fitness with a busy schedule?

I’m up early and make sure I’m at a morning class to make sure I start off my day accomplishing something. Life and plans are always changing in the evenings and weekends so the easiest way to get a workout in is coming in the morning. I’ve also taken a lot of time changing the way I eat. Used to be supper was really my only full meal and it was usually garbage food. Now I make sure I cook healthier meals and always make enough to have leftovers for lunch the next day. Meal prepping for breakfast has also been a huge help to making sure I get enough to eat all day.

How does CrossFit help you with your job?

I’ve been surprised at how much CrossFit has helped with work. I’m less irritated through-out the day and typically in a better mood. I also don’t feel as uncomfortable if I have to sit in a chair all day.

What is your favorite thing about Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

The people from the coaches to other athletes is one of the best things. Everyone working for a common goal and helping each other succeed is one of the best things that you see and it’s on an everyday basis.
