Connor Kayton – March Athlete of the Month

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do for a living/study?

I graduated high school from Wauneta-Palisade, NE, but moved around a decent amount when I was a kid between Kansas and Nebraska. I own a Commercial General Contracting firm here in Lincoln.

How did you find out about Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

I had been wanting to try out CrossFit for several years before coming to my first class. Finally at the beginning of 2021 I committed to joining and it has since been my best fitness decision to date. I originally found out about LNF through another member Jesse Svoboda.

What was the biggest obstacle for you to start?

Initially getting started the biggest challenge was my cardio. Since playing college football I had not really pushed my body physically the way CrossFit demands, so I would say mentally and physically getting back into the place where I can push it hard.

How did you overcome that obstacle?

Consistency. The first 4-5 months of CrossFit I fairly religiously attended class 4-5 times a week and kept grinding to build my base up.

Do you remember your first workout?

The first workout I vividly remember was called ten times 21. 10 rounds of 10 box jumps, 10 BFB and 1 heavy deadlift. Big wake up call for what was to come.

Who was your coach, how did they help you push through it?

Coach Austin has been my main coach throughout my time at LNF. Austin does an excellent job at walking me though the movements that I need specific work on but yet pushing me hard in the workouts and holding me to a standard.

Why do you keep coming back to Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

Since joining LNF I have really just geeked out over the whole CrossFit space. I love the sport and the programming and most importantly the group of people at LNF has been the most enjoyable group to workout with and push each other in my fitness career.

How do you balance health & fitness with a busy schedule?

My schedule is often the most challenging for me. I have made much more of a priority to ensure I am getting my workouts in since beginning CrossFit. Being in the industry I’m in, I don’t have a set schedule or normal working hours. Every single day brings different challenges and priorities shift. When I know I have meetings during my normal workout time I try my best to hit one of the morning or evening classes to get my work in.

How does CrossFit help you with your job?

I’ve most frequently attended the noon class. I’ve found this is an excellent break in the day to put in some hard work and set work aside for an hour. This has helped me refocus for the afternoon and productivity has increased due to this.

What is your favorite thing about Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

As previously mentioned, the people has been and what will keep me at LNF for the long haul. There is a great competitive nature throughout the gym that makes you push to the next level, but yet everyone is willing to help you work on a movement or technique that you may struggle with. CrossFit brought me in but the community will keep me here.
