In my 13 years of experience as a fitness coach, I have worked with a wide variety of clients, all with different fitness goals in mind.
The simple answer to whether you should bulk or cut is dependent on your goals, your body type, and your fitness experience. Let’s start with goals.
To start, establish a one year goal, now imagine yourself accomplishing your goal.
- How does your body feel?
- What kind of emotions are you experiencing?
- What clothes are you wearing?
- Where are you working out?
- What does your partner say about your success?
Now, work backward.
- How did you accomplish your goal?
- What was the process?
To accomplish your goal, what was your first step? Did you need to gain weight or lose weight to get to your final result?
For many of our clients, the goal is to burn fat, lose weight, build muscle and feel healthy.
So if you’re already lean, I would suggest starting a bulk program, you will need to add size to look strong and lean in the future.
If you’re already strong, but want to look more trim, toned and feel athletic, you may want to consider losing weight and starting a ‘burn’ program. You likely already have the muscle you just need to focus on improving your body composition.
Because every individual is different. I highly recommend working with a coach. A coach will sit down, identify your goals and tailor a program that will help you reach your goals.
