What Your Body Can Do: The Real Reason We Train

It’s not about the whiteboard. It’s about everything the whiteboard makes possible.

There’s a question I’ve started asking — myself, my athletes, anyone who will listen:

What can your body do today that it couldn’t do before you started?

The answers are almost never about the gym. Nobody says, “I can deadlift more.” Nobody talks about their Fran time. What they actually say — the stuff that stops me every time — sounds simple on the surface. But it means everything.

My Personal List

I pride myself on something most people dread: helping people move. Couches, dressers, boxes stacked way too high — I genuinely love it. Whenever someone I know is moving into a new home and needs an extra set of hands, I volunteer. Every time. And the fact that my body can do that — that I can spend a few hours hauling heavy things and feel good doing it — is something I don’t take for granted.

A little while back I climbed up on my roof to clean my gutters. Grabbed the ladder, went up, got the job done. Simple enough. But I paused up there and thought about two things: my body was physically capable of doing it, and I had the confidence to do it without hesitation. That confidence — the belief that your body can handle what life asks of it — is something I’ve built through years of training. And it’s something I want for every single person who walks through our doors.

Even at the grocery store. When someone offers to help carry my bags out, I smile and say no — not out of pride, but because I genuinely get a little excited about it. My body can carry its own groceries. That sounds small. It isn’t. It’s the kind of small thing that quietly tells you where you stand.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe: fitness isn’t really about what you can do in the gym. It’s about how the gym changes what you can do everywhere else. The heavy lifting, the early mornings, the hard workouts — they’re practice. Life is the test.

The Stories That Stick With Me

I had a personal training client who had been through a rough stretch — COVID had taken a real toll on their body, and we spent months building them back up. One weekend after a big snowstorm, I got a text. They had just shoveled their entire driveway. No back pain. And they still had energy left over to play with their kids inside afterward.

That text lives in my head rent-free. Because that right there — that’s everything. That’s the whole point.

Another athlete came to CrossFit Lincoln because they couldn’t keep up with their family on a hike during vacation. They were the one falling behind — struggling while everyone else moved ahead. That’s a hard feeling. You’re in a beautiful place with people you love, and your body is the thing holding you back.

They showed up. They put in the work. The following year, same trip, same trail — they crushed it. Fully there, fully capable, fully enjoying every step. Not just surviving the hike — leading it.

Those are the moments I think about when someone asks me why I do this. Not the PRs. Not the programming. Those stories.

What We’re Actually Building

At CrossFit Lincoln, we have people of every age, background, and ability level. Some are in their 20s chasing performance. Some are in their 50s and 60s wanting to stay strong and active for decades to come. They all want different things on the weekend — hikes, yard work, playing with grandkids, keeping up with their teenagers, doing home projects without paying for it the next day.

What we want for all of them is the same: to be capable of whatever life asks.

The deadlifts, the pull-ups, the early mornings — they’re not the point. They’re the preparation. And the real test isn’t in the gym. It’s the snowstorm text. The hike you finally finished. The ladder you climbed without thinking twice. The groceries you carried without being asked if you needed help.

That’s functional fitness. Not a buzzword — a reality. Training your body to actually function in your actual life.

Already Training With Us? I Want to Hear Your Story.

If you’re already part of the CrossFit Lincoln community, I want to know — what can your body do today that it couldn’t before? The thing you stopped dreading. The moment something clicked.

Those stories matter. They inspire the people next to you in class. They remind all of us why we show up. Send me an email, tell me after class, or text me— I read everything and I mean it when I say these stories are the reason I do this work.

Thinking About Starting? This Is For You.

If you’ve been on the fence — if the hike still wipes you out, the yard work feels like too much, or you just want to feel more capable and confident in your everyday life — come talk to us. No commitment, no pressure. Just a conversation about where you are and where you want to be.

We offer a free No Sweat Intro for exactly this reason. You don’t have to be fit to start. You just have to start.

Your body is capable of more than you think. We’d love to help you find out how much more.
