KATE HIGGINS – August Athlete of the Month

We are so very grateful to honor Kate this month as our athlete of the month. She encourages our 6am class to find what they are capable of and she pushes our coaches to continually grow. When Kate is in town she also volunteers with our CrossFit Foundations for Adaptive Athlete class on Saturday afternoons.

From Kate:

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do for a living/study? Feel free to add more.

I’m a native Nebraskan and moved back in 2019 after being gone for about 15 years.  I’m a neuropsychologist for Nebraska Athletics and UNMC Neuropsychology.  I have a cat named Brian, a dozen nieces and nephews, and could eat ice cream every single day for the rest of my life and not get sick of it.

How did you find out about Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

Google it was the closest CrossFit gym to my house and after a class or two knew I didn’t need to look any further.  I’d been doing CrossFit on and off for several years as I moved around for schooling/training and was ready to get back into it.

What was the biggest obstacle for you to start?

The cost.  When I don’t do CrossFit, I run and that’s free, so I always have to grit my teeth a little when I pay to work out, but it’s worth fitting it into my budget.

How did you overcome that obstacle?

I needed some accountability and running during Nebraska winters is miserable, so I wanted to be able to work out inside.

Do you remember your first workout?

I don’t remember my first workout at CrossFit Lincoln, but I remember my first crossfit workout (at a CF gym in Missouri).  It involved something like 50 burpees.  I HATED every minute of it

Who was your coach, how did they help you push through it?

Obviously, wasn’t a CFL coach, but I don’t think they even knew I was struggling- I’m a good stoic Midwesterner.  Once I was done, the exercise endorphins made me forget how much it sucked and I was really proud of myself for completing the workout, so I kept going back

Why do you keep coming back to Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

I love the community at CFL and the growth that I see in my fitness

How do you balance health & fitness with a busy schedule?

I have to do morning classes- usually the 6am- and have a consistent morning routine.  Otherwise the day gets busy or I get tired and can’t motivate myself to go.

How does CrossFit help you with your job?

I feel so much more alert, motivated, and happy when I’ve worked out in the morning.  I’m able to focus more with my patients and be more efficient in the inevitable mountains of paperwork that are a part of my job.

What is your favorite thing about Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness?

The people, no question.  The coaches are so obviously invested in our successes as athletes and I love the community that develops with other athletes through the shared commiseration of working out at 6am and friendly competition.

I also appreciate that it is acceptable to drink beer and eat pizza- some CF gyms I have been a part of were so rigid in their health expectations that I felt guilty for ever missing a workout or eating good food.  I think this is reflective of CFL’s intentionality to be accessible to anyone who wants to come and makes it a great gym to call home!
