Jose Martinez: November 2024 Athlete of the Month

How did you find out about Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness and CrossFit?

My wife took a class that was led by Heather. The name of the class was BirthFit. At that time, I was telling my wife how I didn’t have motivation to go to the gym anymore. I’d normally go 4-5 days to Goodlife Fitness to work out by myself or with a few friends when our schedules allowed. I knew I needed some sort of change. So my wife suggested CrossFit Lincoln since she had really liked the class that Heather gave.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do for a living/study?

Born and raised in Lincoln, NE. My parents were born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico and migrated to the Lincoln, NE in their teens. We usually try to go back to visit every year or two in December. I work for an ecommerce company called Spreetail. I am a Software Engineer that builds in-house software that our employees use to sell products on a variety of channels. My wife and I married during COVID – we had planned to have about 500 people attend our wedding (this is normal for Mexican wedding) but because of COVID we reduced it to 10 people. My wife and I both agreed that this worked out better as our wedding day wasn’t stressful and we got to enjoy it with our immediate family. My wife and I have a 2-year-old daughter.

What was the biggest obstacle for you to start?

To start it was just the feeling of being the new guy there. Mainly because a lot of the things that we do at the gym I had never done before. So, it was a bit frustrating when I couldn’t do things or lift as heavy.

How did you overcome that obstacle?

Just showing up and being okay when I can’t do a certain thing or when I have to scale a workout.

Do you remember your first workout?

I don’t not.

Who have your coaches been? How have they helped you through your first year of CrossFit?

When I first joined, I did the afternoon classes w/ Austin. Then I switched to noon classes w/ John, Cassaundra, Heather, and Theresa. All coaches have been super helpful. Feedback is important to me and all coaches do a good job providing feedback.

Why do you keep coming back to LIncoln Nutrition & Fitness?

I feel comfortable and at home there. People there are super cool – I’ve made a few friends there. And then the coaches are great! There’s a new CrossFit that would save me 10 minutes of driving (which would be helpful since I work out during my lunch break) but I can’t see myself making the switch.

How do you balance health & fitness with a busy schedule? How do you stay so consistent in the gym?

Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness makes it super easy. Just show up for an hour and burn a ton of calories. I like that I don’t have to plan out my workout and that every week is a bit different so you get to work out different parts of your body. I always leave feeling like I had a great workout.

How does CrossFit help you with your job? How does CrossFit affect the rest of your life?

My job (like any) gets stressful – CrossFit gives me a chance to focus on something else while releasing some of that stress. As far as for everything else – I do CrossFit to stay fit so I can have the energy to “try” to keep up with my daughter’s energy and then to stay healthy to watch her grow.

What is your favorite thing about Lincoln Nutrition & Fitness: Home of CrossFit Lincoln?

Number 1 things is just being able to show up for an hour and after feeling like I had a great workout.
