10 Ways to Hold Yourself Accountable – Goals CrossFit Lincoln Style

If I asked you if eating healthy foods was important, you’d probably say, “Of course.” And if I asked whether regular exercise is key for living a strong, healthy life, you’d most likely nod again. What are your current goals?

So here’s the real question: if we know that nutrition plus fitness is the magic formula for a vibrant, healthy life… why don’t we consistently do both? Why do we sometimes prioritise one and neglect the other? Why do we wait until a wake-up call—a flight of stairs that leaves us breathless, or a high blood-pressure reading—before we decide to get serious?

After years of working with thousands of people here at CrossFit Lincoln, I’ve learned the answer comes down to one thing: accountability.

Here’s the truth—most of us will let ourselves down before we’ll let someone else down. We’ll skip the workout we promised ourselves we’d do, but we’ll show up if a friend is expecting us. We’ll fudge the meal plan we committed to, but we’ll happily keep a dinner date with someone else.

The problem is that every time we don’t follow through on our own promises, we chip away at our confidence. We start to see ourselves as inconsistent or incapable—and that mindset can be harder to break than any bad habit.

That’s why, when you first start your fitness journey, it’s okay to rely on external accountability. In fact, at CrossFit Lincoln, we build it in from day one. Our coaches send reminders, we check in if we haven’t seen you, and we cheer you on when you walk through the door. We high-five after workouts, celebrate your milestones, and even follow up if you’ve been missing from class.

And then there’s the magic of our community—your fellow athletes who notice when you’re not in your usual class, send you a “Hey, you okay?” text, and genuinely miss your presence. At CrossFit Lincoln, you are never forgotten.

But here’s the tough love part: no matter how much support you get from us, accountability has to take root inside you. It’s up to you to make the daily choices that move you toward your goals. We’ll guide, coach, and cheer, but the commitment has to be yours.

So, how do you stop letting yourself down and start holding yourself to the same standard you hold for others?

Here are 10 proven ways to hold yourself accountable—CrossFit Lincoln style:

1. Set a Goal to Engage with the community.

Our community is the secret sauce. Don’t just show up for class—connect, talk, laugh, share your wins and struggles. The more you feel a part of the group, the more likely you’ll be to show up, even on days you don’t feel like it.

2. Schedule your workouts like unmissable appointments.

Set reminders on your phone and treat them like you would a meeting with your boss—you wouldn’t skip that, right? Do the same with meal prep reminders so you’re not scrambling for a quick (and usually less healthy) option.

3. Tell a coach your plan.

Let one of our coaches know when you’ll be in class. It creates a little healthy pressure—you’ll want to keep your word. Plus, your coach will be ready to greet you and keep you on track. Schedule a goal session!

4. Track your wins visually.

Print a calendar, stick it where you’ll see it, and mark every workout or successful day of healthy eating. It’s motivating to see those marks stack up—it’s proof you’re doing the work.

5. Share your journey publicly.

Whether it’s social media, a blog, or our community Facebook group, putting your goals out there makes you more likely to follow through. And you might inspire someone else in the process.

6. Take progress photos.

It’s easy to forget how far you’ve come because change is gradual. Comparing today’s you with day-one you can be a huge motivation boost.

7. Have regular check-ins.

At CrossFit Lincoln, we offer quarterly goal-setting sessions to help you evaluate progress and reset goals. If you’re not a member yet, pair up with a friend and schedule these check-ins yourselves.

8. Know your “why.”

Goals are great, but without a clear “why,” motivation fades fast. Maybe you want to keep up with your kids, reduce stress, or prove to yourself that you can do hard things. Visualise it daily so it stays front of mind.

9. Drop the all-or-nothing mindset.

Fitness and nutrition are long games. A bad day, a missed workout, or an indulgent meal doesn’t undo your progress. Learn from it, then keep moving forward.

10. Reward your milestones.

Set mini-goals along the way and celebrate when you hit them. It could be new workout gear, a day trip, or simply an afternoon doing something you love. Rewards keep the journey fun.

The key is to experiment and find what works for you. And remember—what works now might not work forever, so switch it up to keep things fresh.
