Find the Funk and Fix It: How to Break Free from a Funky Mood

Have you been feeling a bit funky lately? You’re not alone. I’ve heard from many people who say they’re in a funk right now, often with a resigned, “I’ll eventually get out of it.” But why wait for it to pass when you can take action now?

Just like when you smell something funky in your house—be it moldy cheese in the fridge, sweaty gym gear, or a stinky diaper—you don’t just leave it be. You find the source and take care of it. The same should apply to your mood. Instead of ignoring it or hoping it goes away, challenge yourself to sniff out the reason behind your funk.

Here’s where you can start “smelling” out what’s causing your funky mood:

1. How’s Your Nutrition?

  • Are you eating on a schedule, or just whenever you have time (which might mean not eating enough)? Smells funky!
  • Have you been indulging in more processed foods or eating out more than usual?
  • Is your sugar intake up? Those extra desserts at family gatherings might taste great but could be contributing to your funk!

2. How Are You Moving?

  • Have you been skipping your workouts?
  • Are you sitting more than usual, maybe getting sucked into a few too many Netflix episodes?
  • Feeling slow and tired? Your body might be craving movement!

Starting to smell the funk? Outside of nutrition and fitness, there are other areas to consider:

  • Sleep: Are you getting enough rest?
  • Relationships: Are they supportive or draining?
  • Job: Is work causing stress or dissatisfaction?

How to Get Out of a Funk:

Once you’ve figured out what’s causing your funk, it’s time to take action:

  1. Dial in Your Nutrition: Limit processed foods and sugar, and increase your intake of whole foods. Less cookies, more kale!
  2. Hydrate: Drink at least 100 oz of water daily. This helps flush out toxins and cut back on caffeine and alcohol, which might be contributing to your funk.
  3. Move Your Body: Get outside, soak up some sun, and breathe in the fresh air. Recommit to your fitness routine, or if you haven’t established one yet, now’s the time.
  4. Surround Yourself with Support: Find a community that notices when you’re off and helps you get back on track.
  5. Hire a Coach: Coaches have a keen sense for funky attitudes and moods, and our team has the tools to guide you out of your funk.

It may sound silly, but addressing this seriously can make a huge difference. The first step is recognizing that you’re in a funk and identifying the cause. Once you’ve done that, you can take steps to clear it up.
